Using my digital camera I hope to convey in this journal the wonder and joy of living in a beautiful and mysterious land called New Zealand.

St Clair Summer Sunset
I've waited a long time to take this. The road above the beach is still partly closed but at least I can reclaim this view from now on.

Crane Accident
The crane tipped over this morning right in front of my office. I literally saw it as it happened. Fortunately nobody was injured which is amazing because the boom of the crane extends right out into the middle of a busy intersection.
The crane has a 70 tonne lifting capacity so it is very large. The rescue operation used 3 different cranes to remove it and took all day.
The biggest lesson I learnt today is to always have a camera at the ready. I had to go home at lunch time to get one.

Last Cruise Ship Visit
The last cruise ship for the season departs Port Chalmers bound for unknown waters. The light was fading fast and so I was hoping the ship would turn on its deck lights before heading out to sea. She was an impressive sight gliding silently in calm waters without any obvious assistance from the harbourmaster.

Southerly Aspect in Hiatus
I have missed this vantage point since John Wilson Drive was closed to the public by the City Council for construction reasons. Hopefully the drive will be open to pedestrians soon.

Solitary Island
There was a shimmer of light on the horizon that was very hard to capture on camera but you can see it on the far left. At wider focal lengths it seemed to accentuate the curvature of the earth. Best viewed large.

Taieri Beach
A small explanation about this one is in order. Firstly there is a colour version further down the photostream for comparison. I always think if it looks good in colour then it will also make a good black and white photo as well.
This is slighly different to how I do things as I normally use Picasa or PS Elements for my basic editing.
But I have recently discovered picnik.com and they have more features than are provided on flickr so I have used their online editing tools to edit this photo.
So far it has been a success.
I haven't done many beach shots lately but something always draws me back to the coastline.
Today we had interesting weather patterns that produced warm weather, lots of storm clouds and diffused sunlight which was perfect for middle of the afternoon photography.
Normally the light at this time of the day would be too harsh but today it was perfect.
